This year, your generous donations for Fund-A-Need will restore our auditorium chairs, which are in need of repair. Our chairs have stood the test of time – cradling our children during school assemblies, keeping us appropriately attentive on Back-To-School Night, watching with us through joyful tears for the annual Talent Show, 8th Grade Musical and Kindergarten Graduation. They’ve listened eagerly during piano & violin recitals, Holiday and Spring Music Shows, Coffee With the Principal, and too many other school events to recount. So many wonderful memories are carried with our once beautiful chairs.
Our Chairs’ Grand History
Our auditorium chairs’ history does not begin at NDV. In 1915, San Francisco played host to the Panama-Pacific International Exposition – The World’s Fair. San Francisco was eager to show the world its recovery from the 1906 earthquake and created an unparallelled 635-acre “city within a city” arising out of the ashes of a devastating earthquake and fire. Our folding chairs were likely used in exhibition halls, as over 19 million fairgoers experienced the discoveries, celebrities, politics, arts, and zeitgeist of the era.
When the Panama-Pacific International Exposition closed on December 4, 1915, it all had to go — everything inside the buildings, and then the buildings themselves. Regrettably, very little remains of this historic event. Luckily someone purchased our folding chairs and kept them for 10 years before NDV opened in 1924. In fact, our folding chairs likely represents the largest collection of fair artifacts. The deserve a little TLC.
Restore Our Chairs
Let us breathe new life into these chairs so that they may last another 102 years. Please raise your paddle on the night of the Bal and help us raise the needed funds to refurbish our historic wooden chairs. With your support, we will restore the auditorium chairs to their original beauty, while ensuring they remain part of NDV’s future for years to come.
